Bilfinger Academy improves corporate academy with new learning platform

How the international engineering and services company Bilfinger SE harmonised the management of its training offer and broadened its reach within the organisation.

The customer

Bilfinger SE (until 2013 Bilfinger Berger) is an international engineering and services group for industrial facilities, power plants, real estate and infrastructure. The company plans, builds, operates and maintains plants and buildings through to managing shutdowns. Its core business also extends to construction and property management, together with financial services and risk management.

The company was founded in 1975 through the merger of several construction firms as Bilfinger + Berger Bauaktiengesellschaft. Based in Mannheim, the company employs around 67,000 employees worldwide, of whom 37,000 work in industrial services, with another 15,000 employed in building and property services.

The challenge

The Bilfinger Academy was using SAP Training and Event Management for the creation, implementation and management of presence training. The introduction of e-learning required a further platform, which would incur further license fees. There was neither a central personnel data system nor any interface to a clearing system. The objective was to create a centralized, company-specific learning platform that could be reached via the internet or intranet, but nevertheless provided one hundred percent data protection for sensitive information about participants.

The solution

Using SAP master data tts created a customer-specific learning environment with the SAP Learning Solution (LSO). To this end personnel data and data from the external e-learning system was merged and reconciled. The learning portal offers an individual and user-friendly front end, created in Typo3. Data is exchanged with the SAP system via web services, and thereby kept current. The Learning Management System (LMS) facilitates consistent training and participant management.

The implementation

Implementation was planned to take nine months, but the learning platform was ready for use after just six months. Bilfinger launched the LMS and e-learning at employee town hall meetings and presented it in the company’s employee magazine. Individuals have access to learning content but not to seminar planning or booking. They enroll through multipliers via the multiplier portal. The relevant personnel or functional department puts forward names for mandatory e-learning modules. In terms of content, the Bilfinger Academy started with the Compliance e-learning module, which is mandatory for all permanent employees with a PC workplace.

Although the system is still in the rollout phase, half of the identified target group have already undertaken e-learning – six months into the project, 20,000 e-learning courses have been completed or are in progress.

Bilfinger first offered the e-learning modules in German and English to 300 companies in six organizational divisions across Germany. The learning program on Compliance is also available in Dutch, Polish, Czech, Norwegian and Russian. Meanwhile the Bilfinger Academy is rolling out its e-learning offering worldwide and will make further e-learning modules available, for example on industrial safety.

The benefits

Thanks to the new platform the Bilfinger Academy made its offerings substantially more accessible, achieving enterprise-wide distribution. In practical terms, this means that units are now booked that previously went unnoticed in the printed catalog. The Academy can better discharge its responsibilities as a service center, because it functions like an external fee-charging training company that has to compete in the internal market.

The consolidation of data and the faster, easier implementation of courses mean that the Academy is now working with appreciably greater efficiency. Each employee who now logs into one of the Bilfinger Academy’s mandatory e-learning modules also gets an overview of his training history and can see his current booking status for future training.
