Swiss Railways (SBB) trains 900 executives in a new reporting system
How Swiss Railways (SBB) rapidly and flexibly prepared around 900 executives in a new reporting system in three languages with the help of web-based training.
What would public transport be like in Switzerland, if it were not for SBB? The effort and dedication of around 28,000 employees ensure that each year, 306 million passengers and 54 million tonnes net of goods are transported across 3,011 kilometers of track. The top priority is safety for people and for the environment. The energy needed to power the system is created with the help of hydropower, making rail the most energy-efficient means of transport in Switzerland.
In addition, Swiss Railways stands for values such as punctuality, comfort and cleanliness that are crucial to customer satisfaction and the company’s success. Each day 9,000 trains travel on the Swiss network. The people who are responsible to ensure that each one arrives punctually and safely at the right platform are the 9,300 employees of SBB Infrastructure.
The main objective for the introduction of a web-based reporting system in the SAP Enterprise Portal at SBB Infrastructure was to automate financial reporting and accounting. In addition, this reporting should be standardized and simplified and should thereby lead to an improvement in self-service management within SBB Infrastructure, where a single point of access enabled access to the reporting data and analysis. Given that there was already a training platform (e-tutor from STEAG), the e-learning content had to be integrated into this existing system.
More than 900 managers of SBB Infrastructure had to be inducted into the new program at their own desktops and trained in the new application using web-based trainings (WBTs). Unusually, the training programs were needed in three different languages (the three official languages of Switzerland: German, French and Italian), with the content varying in the individual languages. Moreover SBB wanted documentation that would be ready for download, would provide examples and would clarify both the program and its application.

After a detailed briefing from SBB, tts trained ten authors, whose task would be to create the web-based e-learnings and the guidebooks. First of all the authors sketched out the e-learning sequences in German with tt knowledge force. Next, these sequences were knitted together in the learning management system-tutor from the company STEAG to create complete learning trajectories. The tuition program was then tested in a pilot run, to eliminate any possible stumbling blocks. Observations from this pilot phase (feedback and tuition controlling) enabled the revision of the pilot version of the German edition of the training program. With the friendly user interface of tt knowledge force, the content could be updated time and cost-effectively.
Once the German edition was ready, the SBB documentation authors published French and Italian editions using the re-recording function of tt knowledge force – and so the translation of the system texts was achieved directly in tt knowledge force, without the intervention of translators. Only the supplementary free texts had to be exported, translated via an external translation agency and re-imported. tt knowledge force then generated the corresponding documentation, illustrated with application examples. The WBTs and the documentation could then be exported as .zip files, uploaded into e-tutor, activated via the AICC interface and made available to all 900 managers.
In the first quarter tts trained the SBB authors, and as early as May these authors created the required e-learnings. The pilot implementation in June prepared the roll out of the reporing system, which started in the middle of June and was completed by the end of the year. In parallel, the WBTs gradually made the managers familiar with the new system, step by step, at their own desktops. These end users could choose between simple simulations and interactive learning modules. In this way, the path forward became a smooth one, enabling SBB to work effectively with the new reporting system from the end of the year.
The integration of the tts solution within the existing training platform, and the direct and fast induction of all end users thanks to e-learning and documentation, were the key benefits. In addition, the approach adopted by SBB Infrastructure brought cost savings. The use of WBTs rather than presence training alone saved costs in the order of € 50,000. The AICC interface made it possible to integrate the e-learning program in the existing platform, which 50% of the managers were already using.
This not only provided SBB Infrastructure with comprehensive educational operations management, but also saved roughly a further € 10,000. On top of this, SBB Infrastructure saved a further € 8,000 by virtue of the fact that translation and documentation was done directly with tt knowledge force rather than through external agencies.
