REWE and tts win HR Excellence Award in Gold for innovative learning at the Point of Sale
Heidelberg, 20th of April 2018: As a leading German food retailer with over 120,000 employees, REWE is working hard to improve product competence of their workforce at the POS. In the format of a “digital scavenger hunt” mobile learning was brought to apprentices in REWE supermarkets. The idea and its execution through tts technology did not only convince participants but also the jury of the Human Resources Excellence Awards.
How do I know if a pineapple is ready to eat? Customers at supermarkets expect competent advice on a wide range of products. Therefore, REWE is preparing teams on shop level for better informed customer interactions. With this in mind, Katharina Schupp and Katharina Ebel, HR Experts Learning at REWE Markt GmbH, initiated a project that transferred the concept of mobile learning directly to the point of sale.
The first hurdles came up right at the planning stage: The new learning concept was supposed to address various learning types at the same time, attract young talent with high affinity towards mobile and IT and it was meant to be as close to real life work situations as possible. Another important requirement was simultaneous availability of content on mobile and through REWE’s Learning Management System.
Together with tts Technology Experts a solution was designed that used tablets on store level and connected content with so called “Beacons”. Beacons are Bluetooth transmitters whose signals push information or questions to mobile devices that are located within their range. For the test run, those transmitters were placed discretely between products in a pilot supermarket.
The app “Learning World to go”, developed by Christian Busold, Software Development Lead at tts, processes the Bluetooth signals and retrieves the learning content on the tablet. Next to touch free content access a key feature of this solution is the fact that employees with different roles see different content. Trainees at REWE got to test the learning game first and were absolutely excited about this new and fun way of training.
Katharina Ebel adds that “we earned lots of positive attention within the organization”. For her, the solution is a good way to achieve higher acceptance for mobile learning and to establish tablet-based learning across all markets. By using modern technology, REWE seeks to attract young talent that simply grew up with smart devices. In addition, the use of tablets reduces costs for formal training considerably. Also, mobile learners achieved better results than their “analog” peers in a formal test of product knowledge.
The concept earned attention outside the company as well. REWE and tts won the prestigious Human Resources Excellence Award in the category “Knowledge Management: Learning and Development” with their project. The award honored the level of innovation as well as the project’s integration into REWE’s company strategy. On 22nd of March 2018, Katharina Ebel presented the mobile learning project on the expert conference tts Forum. She highlighted: “tts employees went about the project with just the same enthusiasm and commitment we did.” tts re-created the scavenger hunt at the event and visitors were given the opportunity to test their own knowledge about fruits. What they learned? A pineapple is ready to eat when the bottom of the fruit has a sweet smell to it. Another indicator is the touch of the fruit’s skin: It should be slightly soft, but a bit of pressure applied with your fingers should not leave a dent on the pineapple’s skin
